Is Transit Investment an Economic Driver?
Public transportation has transitioned to a new post-pandemic pattern. Ridership has stabilized around new commute and non-commute trends. Fiscal outlooks remain a challenge as new strategies are under consideration to keep transit operating efficiently. Capital projects got a bump from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, but future growth prospects for many transit systems are being undermined by a backlog of state-of-good repair needs, and the rising costs for critical labor and system expansions. What should state legislators be considering to address the funding gaps facing transit agencies in their states? How have operational changes since the pandemic provided a new context? What economic returns do transit investments provide amid this evolving paradigm?
